WORLD WIDOW’S DAY: OMU CHARGES WOMEN TO PROTECT THEIR RIGHTS

Nigeria women have been urged to redouble efforts in protecting and promoting their rights, dignity and leadership, as men are not their enemy, but themselves that relish in oppressing follow women.

Speaking during a women summit, tagged ‘Innovation for Change,’ organised by Working Fingers Global Service to celebrate World Widow Day in Asaba, the traditional ruler of Okpanam in Delta State and Omu Anioma, Obi Dunkwu, said: “Our challenges are not men; it is women oppressing women, especially in the case of widows.

“In my kingdom, I have abolished all the harmful burial rites when I found out that it is women that subjected their fellow women to these harmful culture.

“I reduced woman mourning husband from six months to two weeks and abolished others, like shaving hair and other related harmful cultures.”

She added that 35 per cent of women globally have experience physical and sexual violence, and “women are under-represented, and the innovative change can only come from women.”

The Convener, Mrs. Jewo Ibi, said the Summit was to avail women, especially widows, the opportunity to train in agricultural technology.
