Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has confiscated adulterated goods including sugar, milk and fertilizer valued at N14 million at a popular market in Kano.
Director general SON, Osita Anthony Aboloma disclosed this yesterday during a sensitization program with business community on essence of market surveillance deployed across the country, stressing that seizure of the substandard consignment was carried out during a routine raid by special surveillance team.
Abolomo who raised alarm of prevalence of adulterated products in circulation reminded that SON is presently prosecuting owners of the products and will not relent in ridding markets of fake products.
Represented by zonal head, Northwest zonal office, Adamu Abba, Abolomo regretted that despite the agency’s close surveillance, local manufacturers and importers of fake products often bypass regulating agencies to perpetrate their nefarious acts. He explained SON is leveraging on support of business community and critical stakeholders across the country to check the influx of adulterated goods.
The body also appealed to the Federal Government to return the body to the ports, noting that, such was the only way to checkmate the influx of substandard products into the country.
The appeal was made by the Director, Inspectorate and Compliance Directorate, Obiora Manafa while fielding questions from journalists after evacuating substandard roofing sheets products at Tevoli Aluminum factory at Ikot Oku Ikono junction in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital yesterday.
According to him, those substandard roofing sheets confiscated and evacuated are not good for consumers because the minimum standard required is 0.4mm instead of 0.25mm which the company was using for the production of roofing sheets.
The exercise which affected three aluminum factories in the state with the value of confiscated roofing sheets put at more than N2million, he appealed to those preparing to build houses to always look for registered engineers to help in purchasing building materials.
The director, who frowned at the way Nigerians are involved in dubious businesses, noted that, SON would not be deterred at ensuring those substandard products are confiscated and destroyed so as to act as deterrent to others.
He said SON is working in collaboration with relevant agencies to develop technical structures to further tighten the market against fake products.
