This is aimed at ending open defecation by 2025 by providing toilets and other sanitary/hygiene facilities to communities under its community-based waste management programme.Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing to commemorate 2019 National Environmental Sanitation Day in Abuja.
Odusote, represented by Director of Special Duties, Yakubu Mohammed, said the government wants to institutionalise sound environmental sanitation practices as a lifestyle among the populace.She said that six months ago, President Muhammadu Buhari declared a state of emergency on water sanitation and hygiene with emphasis on ending open defecation.
According to her, undesirable consequences of poor excreta disposal leads to persistently high rate of diarrhea disease which is the second cause of high morbidity and mortality in children under five.
The Permanent Secretary further said that the government would step up sanitary inspection to address the issues of open defecation, food safety, water quality, noise and air pollution, and waste management.
Also, she disclosed that the Federal Government would set up sanitation desk in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enable it establish environmental health and sanitation surveillance system in the country.
